Elephants love to do creative things and to play games and as long as they are not pressured into doing anything they don’t want, they will quickly develop their skills in whatever they have shown an aptitude for. When we launched the elephant art gallery website in 2002 there were only two elephant artists at The Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) where we work: Wanalee and Jojo. Today there are 14 elephant artists and we have truly discovered an activity which the elephants thoroughly enjoy.

I usually work with two elephant artists at a time and for no more than 20 minutes duration each session, after which they usually tire or their creative talents wane. Then they stroll off and eat sugar cane and bananas, or go to the river to take a shower. What a life eh? Usually we work in the mornings between 9.00 and 12.00 noon. Its not that these times are more creative or anything like that, just that it fits in with their other activities and it is a relatively cool time of the day.
